Day 1:

This year, the event was held at Cyclorama in downtown Boston. The first thing people notice was that the venue = small. For a jam that was supposed to give out $50,000 to the winner, it could probably only fit 500-600 people before the fire marshal kicked everyone out (and I am being very generous with those numbers).

Luckily, less than 100 people showed up the first day…?!?! AGAIN, for a jam that was supposed to give out $50,000 to the winner, the support was VERY low. Also, the lack of crews entering (13 total) hurt the vibe even more.

Battle of the Night:
War Machine (Minnesota) vs. Terror Ricans (Puerto Rico and Massachusetts)

Both crews didn’t hold back as each tried to make a statement that they came to win. War Machine showed that they were a well-rounded crew (using everything from footwork, power, style and etc.) while Terror Ricans fought back with their own power and flexible style (by flexible I mean 3/5 of these guys could bend their bodies in ways you never thought was possible).

Day 2:
Around 200 spectators showed up to watch what was supposed to be a Top 16 of the jam. However, since there were only 13 crews to begin with, the host had to settle for 10 crews instead. To make matters worse, one of the Top 10 crews dropped out so it turned into a Top 9 battle instead (no not the Russian crew).

Battle of the Night:
3-Way Final: War Machine Crew vs. Skill Methodz vs. Squadron
Honorable Mention: Supreme Beings vs. Skill Methodz

Due to the uneven bracket, confusion, and the event being very disorganized from the start, it came down to a 3-Way Final. War Machine held there own against Skill Methodz and Squadron, even taking a couple of rounds. The best set had to be when “Wealthy” from War Machine started mimicking “Cloud” from Skill Methodz and even burning him with his own move.

Even with the close battle, in the end…

Winner of United Styles 6:

Skill Methodz

Congrats to Skill Methodz and everyone else that competed. Although the event could have been better organized and have featured more crews, there were still dope battles in the end.

Quote of the Night:

“What the hell is this?” – a 11-year old kid who came to a B-Boy event for the first time expecting it to be a Step Up:3D like competition.

A dope b-boy does not necessarily translate into a good teacher. And a good dance teacher does not necessarily need to be a b-boy with all the moves in the world. However, how wonderful would it be to have a b-boy that had both talents?

Our friend Dyzee from Supernaturalz / 7Commandoz made a recent post titled, Getting Dyzee: Introduction to the “Getting Dyzee” Online Facebook Master Bboy Lessons. (view the link here)

Welcome to my online Facebook Master Bboy Lessons where I am about to share the thousands of Lessons which I have acquired on my now 16 years of an amazing Bboy Journey (since 1994). Throughout the years, I have experienced so many things in bboying, many great, and many bad which has taught me both bboy and life lessons which I am about to share in great detail. If you have met me in person, you will know that I love to share what I have learned, for its very fulfilling to see others learn from my mistakes, experiencing great things that I have never experienced, and not having to experience bad ones. In the end, everyone has to walk their own path. So this is just a guide to fullfill the path to becoming a Legendary Bboy.

Im not saying that I am a Legend, or that I know it all, but many have been asking me the same questions for the past 10 years such as:

–How do I get my own style?
–How do I become famous?
–How do I win battles?
–How do I be original?
–How do I deal with hate?
–How do I make up my own moves?
–How do I find inspiration?
–How do I join a crew?
–How do I inspire those in my crew?
–Where did bboying come from?
–Where is bboying going?
–What is a break dancer?
–What is a breaker?
–What is a bboy?
–What is bboying?

These are but a few, but I intend to cover everything in great detail, step by step. I will include each lesson with as much information I can give. Some of the lessons will be in writing. Some of the lessons will be in video. Some I will be talking and explaining. Others I will be demonstrating.

I expect each person who is learning from this to take the lesson, meditate on it, practice it, and then after, leave a comment, either asking a question, or explaining how it felt or their thoughts on the lesson. When a sufficient amount of people have commented, and I feel that its time to move on, Ill get into the details and post the next lesson, one by one. This may take weeks, months or years before Im finished sharing the 16 years of knowledge that I have aquired through experiences, other bboy masters and sometimes possibly some sort of divine revelations.

When 29 people reply to this introduction, Ill begin with Lesson 1. “The Balance”

dedicated to those who have inspired me
–Dyzee

You can find Dyzee’s actual posting on his Facebook page here.

HOUSE DANCE
In addition to b-boying, I’ve been learning house dance, too; taking lessons from Chelsea, a dancer from the choreo group KickRocks. Learning another style of dance, different than b-boying, has been a wonderful experience because I learned moves I never would have else thought of. House steps, such as the jack, skate, and farmer are so different compared to b-boying. But one thing I got to gripe about are the routine lengths.

–Video clip of house choreo from SixStep studios, where I practice.

Because I am also learning choreo house, sometimes a routine goes past 20 seconds, and all of a sudden I get confused. Yes, I’ve done b-boying routines before, but nothing as energetic or complex as house routines. (I’m sure hip hop choreo is like this, too, right?) Apparently KBE was telling me the longest routine he’s ever done was 6 minutes. Yeah, not for me. In the meantime, I’ll rock the house cyphers until I improve my memory.

Who are some b-boys who have incorporated house steps into their dance?
Off the top of my head:
–Free
–Orb
–Remind
–Issue

KBE and MisLee teamed up for this recent vlog from Seoul, Korea. KBE could be such an unprofessional ass sometimes, I admit. But his personality was the main reason I thought he’d be good on camera for Strife. It’s a nice change of pace compared to our girl hosts. Who watches NBA basketball? KBE reminds me of an Asian Charles Barkley, a guy saying whatever the hell comes to his mind, without much thought. And just like Sir Charles, it is super funny to make fun of him.

KBE has the personality of a Charles Barkley.
But the looks of a Ben Wallace.

First off, what the heck is seminal anyway? Seminal roughly means something that is highly original and could influence the development of future events. So seminal Hip Hop literature would mean books, articles, anything written that stirs the mind and gets you thinking about the topics and issues that pertain to Hip Hop. Now that you have an idea of what I’m talking about, why should you care? Because cultures survive by evolving and adapting. Hip Hop culture is as multifaceted and complex as any other culture but we must remember that it is more than just going out and repping your crew or trying to get you yours. There is no culture in the world that does not have history and Hip Hop is no different. Now, things get a little complicated with Hip Hop because the history isn’t as carefully transcribed or written down, but who knew something that youth from the Bronx created would catch on so fast? However, Hip Hop historians have begun to emerge and amazing literature have been starting to be made public. I’ve compiled a list of worthwhile reads for all those who want to take advantage of this wealth of knowledge and expand their Hip Hop vocabulary to include the history, politics, impact, and various diasporas of people who have had a hand in shaping Hip Hop to what it is today. It’s time to break the stereotype that b-boys aren’t academic or scholarly.

In no particular order:

Can’t Stop Won’t Stop – Jeff Chang

-great chronicle of Hip Hop. It’s a bit thick and meaty since he delves into the politics of not just New York and U.S.A, but Jamaica as well.

Total Chaos: The Art and Aesthetics of Hip Hop – Jeff Chang

-another Jeff Chang masterpiece. This one includes discussion on multiculturalism. I really like Jeff Chang.

Foundation: B-boys, B-Girls and Hip Hop Culture in New York – Joseph G. Schloss

-pretty rich history of b-boying tradition and culture along with a sophisticated discussion on current issues. Plus points for the author since he was a bboy himself.

That’s the Joint! Hip Hop Studies Reader – Murray Forman and Mark Anthony Neal

-a collection of Hip Hop related articles.

Hip Hop Matters – S. Craig Watkins

-Loan

OFFICIAL BBOYWORLD EVOLUTION SHIRT – out now!
Our friends from Bboyworld released their upcoming Evolution 5 event shirt today. The design looks very fresh.
It resembles what you would get if you had a Flava Flav + Statue of Liberty + Zombie = b-boy child.

Evolution 5 will mark the 10 year anniversary of Bboyworld in October, in New York City. Being a Bboyworld moderator myself, I will definitely look to be there. Last year’s event was incredible! It definitely was up there among the best dance jams I’ve ever been to. All of us at Strife.tv had a wonderful time.
DJ FOUR EYEZ – Israel
One of the DJs that was at Evolution last year was DJ Four Eyez from Israel. In an era where many DJs sound the same, or play the same songs, Four Eyez stood out from the crowd with his unique blend of adventurous mixes and cross-cultural samples. In some ways, he reminds me of myself, because he isn’t afraid of experimenting with his work. Some of his samples have come from local Israeli music, Dave Matthews Band, Sting, and Linkin Park. Four Eyez is also a talented b-boy, drummer, and has served in the Israeli military.

You can check out some of his mixes on his Youtube channel.

There have been a flurry of video features being put online by us recently. Some informational, some entertaining, and some quite silly. I personally blame myself for the silliness of some of the videos. My mind wanders at times.

Someone told me that Fridays are the days where websites & blogs get the least amount of viewing traffic. Is that true? I’m posting this on a Thursday, nevertheless. In yo face rumors!

How many viewers have seen b-boy Neguin battle? Like many, I first saw him compete, on video, at Red Bull BC One last year. (watch Cloud vs Neguin here) Wow, this guy blew my mind. He has flips, fast footwork, power, and the ear to hit the music beat. Scary as he sounds, he was a very humble man in front of our Strife cameras during our interview. The interview was filmed at R-16 Korea, where he came in second place. Filmed and edited by our New Zealand correspondent, b-boy Benaza.

Don’t mind KBE, he likes to jump into interviews now & then, no matter if he is the main interviewer or not.

It just wouldn’t be right to interview the 2nd place winner, without interviewing the 1st place champion as well. The winner of the R-16 1v1 was B-boy JustDoIt from the Netherlands. Interviewed by MisLee, he explains his battle strategies and why it is more difficult competing against dancers of different styles.

My favorite quote from this interview has to be:
“He’s from Brazil, they do flips all day….but I flip, too,” with a big smile from JustDoIt.

By the way, I was told by MisLee that press (like us) are not allowed to post full battles from R-16 this year. Everyone has to wait for the DVD to come out.

Life at The Bboy Spot was part 4 of my series from their headquarters in Florida, following the staff of The Bboy Spot: Gina, Mex One, and Spen One. In this video, viewers get to see exactly what life is like working in the b-boy community: the difficulties, the challenges, the hours spent, and so forth.

I seriously loved making this video with Maresco. It’s so easy, it’s fun, and I do have a thing for amusing videos. For people that don’t know b-girl Maresco, she has a really dry sense of humor. However funny the video is, don’t tell her that she has huge arms. It’s the lighting that gave the impression of her super toned arms at the end. She even went the ways to make a personal statement on her Youtube channel here. Personally, I don’t really care what kind of arms a girl has. Although having toned arms does give an indication that one is in good shape, and who complains about that?

Maresco has more one minute specials coming in the near future, so look out for them!

it’s a bunny envelope opener!

THINGS THAT I THINK I THINK
–I think that learning another dance style is refreshing. I went to my first house dance class the other day at Six Step Studios. It was an amazing experience, and definitely broadens my dancing ability. It gave me ideas for moves I would have never thought of otherwise.

–I think I will not purchase StarCraft II until a few more months when I am more free. I got too much work right now, with real life and video projects. Last thing I need is an addictive game.

–I think everyone should go to United Styles 6, coming up in Boston in 1 1/2 weeks! I am excited to experience Boston for the first time.

–I don’t know how long this link will stay up, but I think you should go watch this 5 minute long trailer of the movie Thor.

SONG OF THE DAY:
